Ammonia leak injures 11 and forces precautionary evacuation at Jordan’s Aqaba port

An ammonia leak in the southern industrial area of Aqaba injured at least 11 people and prompted a precautionary evacuation of Jordan’s Red Sea port. Officials said the injuries were minor to moderate and that the leak had been contained. The incident occurred away from residential neighbourhoods, limiting the immediate exposure area, but authorities kept workers out while environmental and safety teams carried out measurements and a further inspection.
Nidal Al-Ouran, the Aqaba authority’s commissioner for environment and public safety, said a small quantity of ammonia escaped during maintenance on an old pump or pressure unit. Gas had accumulated inside the equipment before being released. The maintenance involved an unnamed Japanese company, according to the official account. Workers were to return only after inspectors confirmed that no residual danger remained.
Why even a small release matters
Ammonia is widely used in industrial processes, refrigeration, fertiliser production and chemical manufacturing. It is strongly irritating and corrosive at sufficient concentrations. Official UK chemical-hazard guidance says breathing low levels can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, while high exposure may burn or swell airways, damage lungs and become fatal. Effects depend on concentration, duration and route of exposure, so the number of casualties alone does not measure the seriousness of a release.
The same guidance advises people exposed to inhaled ammonia to leave the source area and seek medical advice. That context supports the decision to evacuate the port and delay re-entry until monitoring was complete. It does not independently establish the cause of the Aqaba incident, which remains based on the local authority’s preliminary account. A maintenance failure, trapped residue or inadequate isolation procedures would require a technical investigation to distinguish.
Inspection and accountability
Authorities now need to determine why ammonia remained inside equipment being serviced, whether the maintenance area had adequate ventilation and detection systems, and whether workers used appropriate protective equipment. Medical follow-up will establish whether any of the 11 injured people develop respiratory complications. The timing of a safe return to work should depend on repeated measurements rather than the initial containment announcement. Aqaba is Jordan’s principal maritime gateway, so even a localised industrial accident can disrupt logistics and raise wider questions about maintenance controls in a port handling energy and chemical infrastructure.
