Atlantic reaches September 11 without a hurricane in record-quiet 2026 season

An exceptionally strong El Niño has suppressed Atlantic development while helping produce sharply different conditions in the eastern and central Pacific.

A historic hurricane drought

The Atlantic hurricane season reached September 11 without producing a hurricane, a record for the satellite era, according to Sky News. Five named storms — Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly and Edouard — had formed, but none reached hurricane strength. In a typical season, the basin would have recorded roughly eight tropical storms and three hurricanes by this point, near the statistical peak of activity.

The milestone is striking because the formal Atlantic season runs from June 1 through November 30, leaving substantial time for development. The previous latest first hurricane dates in the satellite record fell on September 11 in 2002 and 2013. Forecast guidance reviewed by Sky indicated no imminent storm formation, allowing 2026 to move beyond that benchmark while remaining unusually quiet.

El Niño reshapes the basins

The principal explanation is the powerful El Niño in the tropical Pacific. In the Atlantic, El Niño typically strengthens vertical wind shear — changes in wind speed or direction with altitude — that can disrupt the organised thunderstorms needed to build a tropical cyclone. Dry, dusty Saharan air has added another obstacle. The United Nations reported on September 3 that the climate pattern was still intensifying and was expected to persist into early 2027.

Conditions have been markedly different in the eastern and central Pacific. Sky counted 14 tropical storms there, including five hurricanes and three major hurricanes, while multiple systems were active simultaneously in early September. This contrast illustrates why El Niño does not mean a globally quiet cyclone year: it redistributes risk between ocean basins and also influences heat, rainfall and drought far beyond hurricane zones.

Quiet does not remove the danger

Forecasters continue to warn coastal governments and residents against relaxing preparations. A below-normal seasonal total does not prevent a single late storm from making a destructive landfall, and September and October remain active months historically. The UN’s pre-season summary made the same distinction, pairing a 55% probability of a below-normal Atlantic season with a warning that one landfall can reverse years of development. The next test is whether atmospheric suppression persists through the remainder of September or merely delays the basin’s first hurricane.
