August 2026 becomes the hottest August and joint-hottest month on record

Global air temperature reached 1.65C above the preindustrial baseline while extra-polar seas set an August record, sharpening the stakes before COP31.

A new high in the global record

August 2026 was the hottest August measured in the Copernicus ERA5 record and tied July 2023 as the hottest calendar month, according to reports published on September 10. The global average surface-air temperature was 16.96C, or 1.65C above the estimated 1850-1900 preindustrial level. The month was the first since November 2025 to rise more than 1.5C above that baseline.

The Guardian and Sky News independently reported the findings from the European climate-monitoring programme. Both accounts stressed that a single month above 1.5C does not by itself mean the Paris Agreement's long-term temperature goal has formally been breached. That benchmark concerns warming sustained over decades, but the monthly result shows how close the climate system is operating to the limit governments pledged to pursue.

Oceans and Europe also broke records

Heat was not confined to the atmosphere. The average sea-surface temperature outside the polar regions reached 21.07C, the highest August value in the dataset and equal to the highest monthly level previously recorded in March 2024. Western Europe also completed its hottest summer on record, while unusually dry conditions affected countries including Britain, France, Hungary and Romania.

Low flows were recorded along important European rivers, including stretches of the Rhine and Danube. Those conditions matter beyond weather statistics: reduced river flow can disrupt freight, electricity production and industrial cooling, while persistent soil-moisture deficits increase pressure on crops. The Guardian connected the summer's heat with continuing damage from drought, wildfire and stressed public infrastructure, while Sky highlighted the prospect of stronger climate impacts as El Nino develops.

What the 1.5C reading means

The immediate figure should be interpreted as a warning rather than a declaration that the Paris threshold has permanently failed. Natural variability, including the developing El Nino in the tropical Pacific, can lift individual months. The underlying upward trend, however, is driven principally by accumulated greenhouse-gas emissions. A July UN climate report likewise described extreme heat, fires and storms as increasingly severe consequences of continued fossil-fuel use.

Attention now turns to whether El Nino strengthens through the final months of 2026 and how governments respond at COP31 in Antalya in November. The key indicators will include the annual global-temperature ranking, ocean heat, food-price effects and national commitments to cut emissions and finance adaptation. August's records increase the political cost of arriving at the summit without stronger implementation plans.
