Britain discloses nearly $40 million in SpaceX military satellite spending
A government disclosure shows the UK operating about 1,500 Starshield and Starlink terminals as it simultaneously invests in sovereign and European alternatives.
A military network built on commercial infrastructure
Britain has spent nearly $40 million on satellite communications supplied by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, becoming the first government outside the United States to publicly acknowledge operational adoption of Starshield, Reuters reported on September 10. A Ministry of Defence response to a freedom-of-information request said the department has about 1,000 Starshield terminals and 500 Starlink terminals. The disclosed expenditure comprised roughly £13 million for Starshield equipment and airtime and £16.5 million for Starlink services.
The disclosure matters because Starshield is marketed specifically for military and intelligence missions, while Starlink is primarily a consumer and commercial network. Britain began using Starlink in 2022 but later shifted operational communications toward Starshield after SpaceX limited Starlink’s authorised military uses. The ministry told Reuters that Starshield provides stronger encryption, priority access, broader coverage and contractual terms designed for defence customers.
Capability, cost and dependency
Both services use SpaceX’s enormous low-Earth-orbit constellation, ground stations and terrestrial infrastructure, although Starshield traffic travels through dedicated terminals and separate gateways. The military service is considerably more expensive: the ministry disclosed plans costing £5,500 a month for five terabytes of data and £25,000 for unlimited use. Reuters also reported that dedicated terminals cost between £4,000 and £7,000, at least twice the advertised price of comparable business-grade Starlink hardware.
The purchases give British forces rapidly deployable broadband for operations, exercises and remote locations. They also expose a strategic tension. The UK has its own hardened Skynet military communications programme and holds a stake in France-based Eutelsat, operator of the only large functioning low-orbit broadband constellation outside Starlink. Nevertheless, the scale and availability of SpaceX’s network have made it difficult for allied governments to avoid reliance on a single US supplier.
Britain’s parallel sovereignty strategy
A UK space strategy published on September 8 places satellite communications at the centre of national security and commits £2.8 billion to connectivity programmes, including Skynet and domestic low-orbit technologies. The strategy describes space as an increasingly contested domain and calls for stronger sovereign capability, more resilient supply chains and better protection of critical services.
The next test is whether those public investments reduce dependence or merely sit alongside growing purchases from SpaceX. Britain needs immediate operational capacity, while sovereign constellations and European alternatives require years of manufacturing and launches. Procurement decisions, service-price changes and the division of sensitive traffic between Starshield, Skynet and Eutelsat will show whether the government is building redundancy or entrenching a costly single-provider relationship.
