Britain orders 29 battery trains for long-distance northern routes

The Derby-built fleet is scheduled to enter service in 2034 as the government links rail modernisation to capacity, lower diesel use and industrial employment.

New fleet commissioned for TransPennine Express

The British government has announced an order for 29 battery-powered trains intended for long-distance services across northern England. TransPennine Express will operate the new fleet, which is scheduled to be built at Alstom’s Litchurch Lane works in Derby from 2028 and enter passenger service in 2034. The programme represents a significant infrastructure commitment, although passengers will wait years for delivery.

The Adessia Stream trains are designed to operate electrically on equipped routes and use battery power over sections without overhead wires. The government says they will be Britain’s first battery-powered trains used for long-distance mainline journeys. Their ability to bridge gaps in electrification is intended to reduce reliance on diesel without requiring every kilometre of track to be wired before cleaner services can begin.

Capacity and industrial policy

Ministers link the order to a wider plan to increase northern rail capacity by 30 percent over the next decade. The fleet is expected to support 350 jobs directly in Derby and nearly 6,000 positions across the wider British supply chain. The trains are also planned with step-free boarding and onboard connectivity, making accessibility and passenger amenities part of the procurement rather than later additions.

The announcement builds on the TransPennine Route Upgrade, for which the government previously committed funding to improve links between Manchester, Leeds and York. An earlier official plan anticipated procurement of as many as 29 replacement trains for TransPennine Express, alongside track improvements intended to provide faster journeys, more seats and greater freight capacity during the mid-2030s.

A long delivery timetable

The project’s importance lies in how rolling-stock policy, electrification and public ownership are being combined. TransPennine Express is already managed by the Department for Transport’s operator, and the government is moving more English passenger services into public ownership under Great British Railways. The new fleet will therefore become an early test of whether centralised control delivers measurable improvements in reliability and procurement.

The main risks are execution and timing. Construction is not due to start for two years, while service entry is eight years away. Costs, battery performance, infrastructure compatibility and the pace of route upgrades will need continued scrutiny. Nearer-term reliability will still depend on existing trains and engineering works, meaning the announcement establishes a strategic direction rather than an immediate improvement for northern passengers.
