DR Congo's Ebola epidemic passes 7,000 recorded cases
The country's largest documented Ebola emergency is spreading across conflict-affected provinces while the Bundibugyo strain leaves responders without an approved vaccine.
A grim national threshold
The Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ebola epidemic has passed 7,000 recorded cases, making it the country's largest outbreak by case count. Congolese authorities reported 7,022 cases and 3,398 deaths, with another 837 people isolated or receiving treatment. The latest threshold is a new development in an outbreak first detected in mid-May and confirms that transmission has continued despite vaccination research, international assistance and public-health controls.
The epidemic began in Ituri province and is caused by the relatively rare Bundibugyo Ebola virus. It has since moved through remote eastern and northern districts affected by armed conflict, displacement, poor roads and limited health infrastructure. Those conditions complicate the basic work needed to stop Ebola: tracing contacts, safely transporting patients, protecting health workers, maintaining isolation facilities and conducting burials without exposing families or responders.
Spread beyond the original epicentre
A case was confirmed in a seventh province, South Ubangi, earlier in the week, extending the geographic reach of the emergency toward the borders with the Central African Republic and Republic of the Congo. Most recorded infections remain in Ituri, but cases associated with schools have increased anxiety since pupils returned after the holiday period. Handwashing, smaller classes and reduced physical contact can lower exposure, yet they cannot substitute for rapid testing and complete contact tracing.
The Bundibugyo strain makes the response unusually difficult because there is no approved vaccine or treatment specifically available for it, although candidates are being tested. Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids rather than ordinary airborne transmission. Effective control therefore depends on early recognition, protective equipment, safe clinical care, community trust and the ability to follow every transmission chain.
Funding and conflict shape what happens next
The United Nations warned at the start of September that funding shortages and war were leaving some chains of transmission unidentified and creating a risk of spillover beyond DRC. The British government separately announced a £50 million package for surveillance, frontline workers, infection prevention, treatment, community engagement and safe burials, taking its stated contribution to £78 million. That support reflects concern that an uncontrolled outbreak could become a wider regional emergency.
The next indicators are whether the weekly growth in cases slows, whether South Ubangi transmission can be contained, and whether experimental countermeasures become operationally useful. Response agencies must also watch infections among health workers and school-linked clusters. Crossing 7,000 cases is not merely a statistical milestone: it signals that the outbreak is still outrunning parts of the surveillance and treatment system.
