Kabardino-Balkaria avalanche death toll reaches 14 as military investigators open negligence case
The Bezengi disaster struck a 33-person mountaineering group on Mount Mizhirgi, leaving rescuers working in terrain threatened by another collapse.
Search operation after a major avalanche
Russian rescuers had recovered 14 bodies by September 9 after an avalanche engulfed a mountaineering group in Kabardino-Balkaria’s Bezengi Gorge. Meduza reported that the snow mass descended from Mount Mizhirgi on the evening of September 6 and struck a group of 33 people. Ten members descended without assistance, six were hospitalised and three remained unaccounted for when the latest update was published.
The rescue effort was complicated by steep, broken terrain and the possibility of another snow collapse. Those conditions made the rising toll and the status of missing climbers the fresh development, even though the avalanche itself occurred several days earlier. The published report carried an editorial image of the Mizhirgi and Dykhtau peaks, providing geographic context without depicting victims.
Security personnel among the victims
Meduza reported that many members of the group were personnel from Russia’s security agencies attending mountain-training exercises. Rosgvardia confirmed that some of those killed served in the organisation but disputed reports that members of its elite Vityaz unit were among the dead. Civilian instructor Albert Izotov, an experienced 70-year-old mountaineer from St Petersburg, was also identified as a victim.
Military investigators opened a criminal case examining possible negligence. That procedural step does not establish wrongdoing. A representative of Russia’s mountaineering federation argued that the group was experienced, the training site had been considered safe and the volume of snow was extraordinary. Investigators will need to determine whether risk assessments, route decisions, weather information or command procedures were deficient.
Hazard context without a causal claim
United Nations reporting on multi-hazard early-warning systems identifies avalanches, landslides and collapsing ice among the dangers associated with a changing cryosphere, and stresses monitoring and early warning in mountain regions. That global evidence does not show that climate change caused this particular avalanche. The immediate questions are operational: whether the remaining missing people can be found, whether the slope is safe enough for rescuers and what the military inquiry concludes.
