Russia’s daily jet-powered drone campaign forces Ukraine to redesign air defence

Faster attack drones are straining low-cost interception systems, prompting Kyiv to accelerate high-speed interceptors and rely more heavily on combat aircraft.

A faster aerial threat

Russia is using jet-powered attack drones against Ukraine on a daily basis, creating a new challenge for defences developed around slower propeller-driven Shahed-type aircraft. The faster weapons reduce the time available to detect, track and engage an incoming drone. They can also outrun some mobile fire teams and interceptor drones that offered Ukraine a comparatively inexpensive answer to earlier mass attacks.

The change is operationally important because air defence is an economic contest as well as a technical one. Ukraine must protect cities and infrastructure without routinely spending scarce, high-cost surface-to-air missiles on every unmanned aircraft. If cheaper interceptors cannot reach the new drones reliably, commanders face harder choices between using combat aircraft, allocating premium missiles or accepting greater penetration risk.

Kyiv accelerates a response

Ukraine’s presidency confirmed that the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff ordered faster work on high-speed interceptors designed specifically for jet-powered Shaheds. Officials said Ukrainian manufacturers already had prototypes and were working to reach the necessary effectiveness and production scale. Businesses were also being considered for roles in producing, supplying and configuring additional air-defence systems.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later said Ukrainian combat aviation was doing the largest share of the work against the jet-powered variants. He tasked the Air Force and diplomats with expanding aviation capacity and pressing partners to fulfil aircraft and maintenance commitments. That official account corroborates the existence of the new threat and Ukraine’s response priorities, although operational performance data remain sensitive.

The adaptation contest will influence the safety of major cities and energy infrastructure heading into winter. Faster drones can compress warning times and complicate interception geometry even if their payloads are not larger. Ukraine’s answer depends on combining sensors, electronic warfare, aircraft, mobile teams, interceptor drones and conventional missile systems rather than relying on a single defensive layer.

What to watch

The decisive indicators will be whether high-speed interceptor prototypes enter mass production, how frequently combat aircraft must be used and whether Russia can sustain daily launches. Public interception percentages should be treated cautiously unless accompanied by consistent definitions and independent damage assessments.
