A tanker associated with Russia’s shadow fleet is leaking oil into the Arabian Sea after an explosion, according to Sky News coverage published on September 6. The broadcaster highlighted satellite imagery showing the pollution’s extent in waters supporting threatened marine wildlife. Its report brings renewed attention to an ongoing environmental emergency off Oman.
The September coverage concerns a continuing spill, rather than establishing that a new attack has occurred. Sky’s accompanying description identifies nesting turtles, coral reefs, seabirds and endangered Arabian Sea humpback whales among the wildlife in the affected region. It provides no updated numerical estimate of the spill’s size.
A casualty with a longer history
Earlier reporting by Euronews, published on August 14, identified the stricken vessel off Oman as the Caroline Bezengi, carrying approximately one million barrels of Russian crude. That account said an explosion struck the tanker on June 8 off Yemen, its crew was evacuated without injury, and it subsequently grounded near Oman’s Hallaniyat Islands.
Euronews reported that the tanker was subject to EU and British sanctions and that nobody had claimed responsibility for the explosion. Those details establish the incident’s background; they do not identify an attacker. The earlier report also described oil reaching the Omani mainland. Its August measurements should not be interpreted as the spill’s current dimensions.
Environmental risks cross sanctions boundaries
The broader concern predates this casualty. In a June 20, 2025 statement published by the British government, European foreign ministers and government representatives called for coordinated action against Russia’s shadow fleet. They warned that associated environmental and maritime dangers extended beyond northern European waters and could have worldwide consequences.
That statement placed particular emphasis on stateless and falsely flagged ships, closer cooperation between national authorities, and greater transparency in maritime operations. It supplies the policy context for scrutiny of tanker safety, rather than an official assessment of this particular spill. Sanctions enforcement and pollution prevention are connected concerns, but a vessel’s designation alone does not establish the cause of an accident.
The immediate questions are practical: whether the leak can be stopped, how much oil remains aboard, and what updated monitoring reveals about coastal contamination. Fresh measurements and verified information about containment would establish whether conditions are improving.
