Spain records its hottest summer and 61 heatwave days
The 2026 average reached 24.5C as prolonged heat sharpened questions about public health, fires and climate adaptation.
A new national heat record
Spain experienced its hottest meteorological summer since the national series began in 1961, according to figures reported by Euronews from the State Meteorological Agency. The June-to-August average reached 24.5C, which was 2.4C above the long-term norm and 0.3C warmer than the previous record set in 2025. The country also accumulated 61 heatwave days during 2026, 20 more than in 2022.
The pattern extended beyond the conventional summer calendar. A provisional heatwave from September 2 through September 7 affected 16 provinces, after parts of Spain had already recorded July-like temperatures at the end of May. AEMET's historical comparison showed that all ten of Spain's hottest summers occurred during the 21st century, with seven of the eight warmest registered since 2015.
Water reserves offered limited protection
Heavy winter rainfall left reservoirs in comparatively strong condition despite the extreme heat and peak tourism demand. Average storage stood at 62.58 percent, with normally stressed basins including the Júcar, Segura, Mediterranean Andalusian and Catalan systems remaining above half capacity. That reduced immediate water-supply pressure, but it did not shield forests, cities, farms or workers from sustained high temperatures.
Large fires affected regions including Madrid, Aragón and Castilla y León. The season therefore combined an unusual degree of stored water with severe heat and wildfire exposure, illustrating that one favourable indicator does not remove wider climate risks. Heat can strain public health, electricity demand and infrastructure even when reservoirs enter autumn in better condition than during drought years.
Adaptation becomes the next test
The European Commission says extreme heat is Europe's leading weather-related cause of death and warns that the continent is warming faster than any other region. Its 2026 guidance recommends heat-health plans, early warnings, greener cities, passive cooling and more resilient buildings. A separate EU profile records €71.76 million in adaptation funding for Spanish regional and local participants in the EU climate-resilience mission.
Attention now shifts to the final validation of September's heatwave, health-impact estimates and the autumn fire season. Spain's experience also raises a policy question: whether adaptation is expanding quickly enough to match longer and more frequent periods of dangerous heat. The record is meteorological, but its consequences will be measured through mortality, labour disruption, agricultural losses and the cost of making homes and public spaces safer.
