Ukraine says missile shortages are forcing fighter pilots into riskier drone interceptions
Faster Russian jet-powered drones are consuming scarce interceptors, pushing Ukrainian aircraft toward close-range cannon engagements as allies prepare additional air-defence deliveries.
Pilots move closer to the threat
Ukraine’s air force says shortages of air-to-air missiles are forcing pilots to use aircraft cannons against Russian jet-powered attack drones, requiring closer and more hazardous interceptions. Air force communications chief Yurii Ihnat described the operational pressure on September 10 as Russia maintained near-continuous drone and missile attacks. Ukrainian MiG-29s, F-16s and Mirage 2000s are among the aircraft being used for the defensive missions.
Cannon engagements demand precise positioning against fast, relatively small targets and leave less margin for error than firing a guided missile from greater distance. The problem has intensified as Russia deploys more jet-powered drones, which travel substantially faster than the piston-engine systems Ukraine has often countered with cheaper interceptor drones and ground-based weapons.
Ihnat said Russia launched roughly 1,500 jet-powered drones in July and 2,800 in August. Those figures come from the Ukrainian air force and cannot be independently reconciled from the available official British material. They nevertheless illustrate the claimed rate of increase and explain why Ukraine is consuming both air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles at a pace that strains its stocks.
Allied deliveries target the shortage
The UK government announced on September 8 that it would contribute £100 million to NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List for Patriot missiles and other air-defence equipment before winter. It also said its broader assistance included interceptor drones. The official announcement does not confirm Ihnat’s detailed operational account, but it independently establishes that air defence and drone interception are urgent procurement priorities.
The changing threat creates a difficult cost equation. Using sophisticated missiles against expendable drones can rapidly drain inventories; relying on aircraft cannon fire places pilots and valuable jets closer to hostile weapons. Ukraine therefore needs a layered response combining electronic warfare, mobile ground teams, interceptor drones, guns and missiles reserved for targets that cheaper systems cannot reliably stop.
The next test is whether allied equipment arrives quickly enough to reduce risky sorties before winter attacks intensify. Watchpoints include delivery dates for Patriot interceptors, expansion of Ukrainian interceptor-drone production and any further change in Russia’s use of jet propulsion.
