West Bengal floods kill three as embankment failure deepens risk around Malda
More than 100 boats have been deployed for evacuations after the Ganges rose above the extreme-danger threshold, flooding villages and constricting a river channel near Bhutni.
Flooding around Malda in India’s eastern state of West Bengal has killed three people and left numerous villages inundated, according to a Guardian weather report published on September 14. The flooding began after heavy rain pushed the Ganges roughly 75 centimetres above the locally defined extreme-danger level. More than 100 boats have been dispatched to support evacuations as water remains across Malda and the nearby Bhutni area.
The most immediate infrastructure concern is a damaged embankment at East Basudevpur. The Guardian reported that a section measuring about 20 feet collapsed, narrowing a river channel from approximately 550 feet to less than 150 feet. That constriction could worsen inundation if it is not repaired while river levels remain elevated. Erosion reported at Khaskol has also disrupted the flow of water toward Bhutni, intensifying the local impact.
A recurring structural hazard
West Bengal’s exposure extends beyond a single period of rainfall. The state’s climate action plan, archived by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, identifies more than half of the region as susceptible to flooding. It describes a complex network of rivers whose headwaters or catchments lie outside the state, including systems connected to Sikkim, Bhutan, Bangladesh and the wider Ganges basin. Heavy rain far upstream can therefore produce damaging flows inside West Bengal.
The plan also identifies erosion, waterlogging and abrupt releases or inflows from connected river systems as recurring hazards. That context matters around Malda and Bhutni, where the current emergency combines high water with physical changes to the river channel. Even if rainfall eases, damaged banks and restricted flow can prolong flooding and complicate access to isolated communities.
What authorities must watch
The immediate priorities are reaching inundated villages, monitoring the weakened embankment and preventing the narrowed channel from creating additional pressure elsewhere. The number of boats deployed indicates that ordinary road access is already unreliable in some locations. Continued high water would also increase the risk that erosion spreads beyond the initially damaged section.
The next significant indicators will be changes in the Ganges level, the pace of repairs at East Basudevpur and whether evacuated residents can return safely. The state climate plan stresses that flood management requires coordination across drainage, irrigation, local government and disaster-response systems. The Malda emergency is therefore both a rescue operation and a test of longer-term resilience in one of India’s most flood-exposed states.
