Wildfires close in on Borneo's Cabang Panti orangutan research site

Researchers and local crews are defending a globally important field station as El Niño-amplified drought allows fires to spread through forest and peatland.

Fire reaches a scientific stronghold

Wildfires in Indonesia's West Kalimantan province have moved to within about 200 metres of the Rangkong field station, a satellite of the Cabang Panti research site in Gunung Palung national park, the Guardian reported on 15 September. More than 40 staff members, field assistants and local residents were working to defend the site with a firebreak and an improvised sprinkler system. Researchers said several individually monitored orangutans had been seen fleeing the flames.

Cabang Panti is important not only as habitat but as a long-running scientific record. Researchers have followed wild orangutans and their life histories there for decades, building evidence about reproduction and how tropical forest species respond to environmental change. A fire that destroys habitat or interrupts continuous observations would therefore cause two losses at once: damage to a critically endangered population and a break in a rare longitudinal dataset.

Why conditions are so dangerous

The Guardian reports that many fires were initially set to clear land, a recurring practice, but that exceptionally hot and dry conditions allowed them to escape control. FAO has separately identified Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, as one of the regions where El Niño most strongly raises fire risk by suppressing rainfall and drying forests and peatlands. Once peat catches fire, it can smoulder below the surface, making suppression difficult and allowing smoke and emissions to persist.

Recent United Nations work in Indonesia has also emphasised the need to protect standing forests and peatlands, restore water management and shift from emergency response toward prevention. Although that initiative concerns Riau rather than West Kalimantan, it verifies the broader institutional assessment that Indonesia's dry season brings elevated forest and peat-fire danger. It should be treated as national context, not independent confirmation that flames reached Cabang Panti.

The next critical days

The immediate question is whether crews can keep the fire from crossing defensive lines around Rangkong and advancing toward Cabang Panti. Researchers warned that without larger firebreaks or stronger intervention, the main station could be threatened within weeks. Rainfall, wind and access to water will shape the outcome. Authorities and conservation teams must also monitor displaced orangutans, because saving buildings alone would not preserve the research programme if the surrounding feeding habitat is lost.
