About 1,400 people fleeing Yemen reached Djibouti within a 24-hour period, according to Djibouti Economy and Finance Minister Ilyas Moussa Dawaleh. The arrivals were reported at Obock, the small coastal city facing Yemen across the Bab el-Mandeb strait. The movement is distinct from the tens of thousands displaced inside Yemen: these families crossed an international border, transforming the latest coastal fighting into a new refugee emergency for one of the region's smallest states.

Djibouti was already hosting more than 36,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers in March 2026, including almost 4,000 people from Yemen. Most of the country's displaced population comes from Somalia and Ethiopia, so a rapid Yemeni influx adds pressure to a response serving several regional crises at once. Obock's facilities are particularly important because people arriving without fuel, food or secure onward transport may need immediate accommodation rather than short-term transit assistance.

The flight followed the Houthi advance around Yemen's Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb approaches. Al Jazeera reported that the group had seized Mocha and surrounding coastal positions, while an international migration agency separately estimated that the renewed fighting had displaced at least 46,000 people inside Yemen. The new arrivals therefore represent only the cross-border edge of a substantially larger humanitarian movement.
