England’s National Health Service experienced its busiest summer on record after five heatwaves coincided with unprecedented demand for emergency care. NHS figures reported by The Guardian show 7,268,445 attendances at accident and emergency departments during June, July and August. That was about 240,000 more than in the same period of 2025 and almost one million above the comparable total in 2022. The figures place extreme heat alongside winter illness as a recurring pressure on a system that previously relied on quieter summers to recover.
Demand rose across several parts of the emergency network rather than at hospitals alone. Ambulance callouts reached 2.46 million over the three months, compared with 2.32 million a year earlier. NHS 111 answered just over three million calls, an annual increase of more than 100,000. The breadth of the increase matters because pressure in one service is normally absorbed by another; simultaneous records leave fewer options for diverting patients or restoring capacity between seasonal peaks.
The official response combines immediate maintenance with longer-term adaptation. The Department of Health and Social Care announced more than £1.5 billion for over 950 projects intended to keep hospitals safe and operational during sustained demand. More than £200 million is allocated to ten major schemes, while over £1.3 billion will address maintenance, safety and resilience. Within the package, £32 million is specifically associated with cooling, ventilation and measures to improve resilience to extreme heat.

The immediate watchpoint is whether emergency demand eases before the traditional winter surge. England’s hospital waiting list also rose to 7.3 million in July, increasing the difficulty of meeting the government’s target to treat 92 percent of waiting patients within 18 weeks by 2029. The summer figures do not prove that heat caused every additional attendance, but they show that record temperatures coincided with system-wide demand and prompted a specific infrastructure response. Future funding decisions will reveal whether heat adaptation becomes a core NHS planning requirement rather than a limited seasonal programme.
