Europe's largest commercial carbon-capture and storage project began operating at Yara's ammonia and fertiliser plant in Sluiskil, the Netherlands, on September 7. The installation is designed to capture and liquefy as much as 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. Ships will carry the material to Norway, where it is intended to be injected into permanent storage beneath the North Sea through the Northern Lights network.

The European Commission formally inaugurated the facility with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra. Brussels describes the project as a practical element of industrial decarbonisation and expects it to store about 12 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over 15 years. The arrangement links a Dutch industrial source to EU-backed transport and Norwegian geological storage.

Northern Lights is central to that model. The EU's infrastructure agency says its first phase can transport and store up to 1.5 million tonnes annually, with a second phase designed to reach five million tonnes or more. EU support for the expansion totals €135.2 million. By giving multiple industrial sites access to shared shipping and storage capacity, the network is meant to lower the barriers faced by individual factories.

Sluiskil is significant because it has entered operation, but its results will determine whether the model can credibly scale.
