Money frozen after Roman Abramovich sold Chelsea Football Club has generated at least £175 million in interest, according to newly reported accounts for Fordstam, the company through which he owned the club. The original proceeds of roughly £2.35 billion have consequently risen to nearly £2.5 billion while remaining locked in a British bank account. The financial return is significant because the money has not yet reached the humanitarian causes in Ukraine for which Britain says it was reserved.

The accounts cover the period only through June 2024, meaning the current balance may be higher after another two years of interest. They record approximately £63 million of interest in 2023 and £114 million in 2024. The disclosure turns the long-running political and legal stalemate into a larger financial question: who ultimately controls the accumulated gains, and whether all of them will accompany the original sale proceeds into a humanitarian foundation.

The government issued a further licence in December 2025 permitting more than £2.5 billion to be transferred to a foundation supporting humanitarian work inside Ukraine. Ministers warned that they were prepared to seek enforcement through the courts if Abramovich did not cooperate. The government and Abramovich have remained divided over the geographic scope of the eventual foundation, with London insisting that the principal funds must benefit people in Ukraine.

Another unresolved issue is roughly £1.4 billion in loans associated with an offshore vehicle that helped finance Chelsea. Repaying money to an entity controlled by a sanctioned person would itself require official permission, and the accounts leave uncertainty over whether the loans could reduce the amount available for aid. Jersey authorities are separately investigating the historical source of part of Abramovich's wealth, adding another legal track without establishing wrongdoing in the new Fordstam filing.
