Iran's year-on-year inflation reached 89 percent by late August, while food prices were more than 127 percent higher than a year earlier, according to Statistical Center figures reported by Al Jazeera on September 13. The rial also fell beyond 1.37 million to the US dollar on Tehran's open market before recovering slightly. Together, those movements mark a fresh deterioration in purchasing power during the continuing war and maritime disruption.
The United Nations has independently identified the humanitarian edge of those pressures. In July, the UN World Food Programme said vulnerable and conflict-affected families in Iran faced growing economic strain that threatened their ability to obtain food; it also described continuing assistance for more than 35,000 vulnerable refugees. What matters next is whether regional diplomacy improves transport through the Strait of Hormuz, whether the rial stabilises, and whether further fuel-price effects push food inflation still higher.
