More than 46,000 people have fled their homes during the latest escalation between Yemen’s Houthi forces and the internationally recognised government, according to UN data reported on Friday. The International Organization for Migration said the total was continuing to rise. The new count makes civilian displacement a major development in its own right, distinct from the territorial gains already reported along the Red Sea coast.

The speed of deterioration was visible before Friday’s updated total. A UN briefing on September 8 reported that more than 5,600 households had been displaced across Taiz and southern Al Hudaydah since fighting intensified on September 3. At that point, humanitarian partners had reached about 2,340 households with emergency supplies, while the UN warned that depleted stocks and access constraints were preventing a response at the required scale.
