An open-source investigation conducted by BBC Russian, independent outlet Mediazona and volunteers has identified 248,844 Russian military personnel killed in the war against Ukraine. The Kyiv Independent reported the updated total on September 14, saying the list covers deaths confirmed through September 10. It added 6,097 names since the investigators’ previous update in late August, illustrating how the record continues to grow even when many of the deaths occurred earlier.
The latest reporting says a date of death is known in approximately 231,300 cases, close to 93 percent of the named total. It also identifies 7,656 officers among those killed. Those details make the database useful for studying when losses occurred and how they were distributed across ranks and recruitment categories, although late-arriving records can substantially revise the picture for earlier periods.
The named list should not be confused with broader intelligence estimates. In a June statement to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the British government cited a GCHQ assessment indicating that nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers had been killed since the full-scale invasion began. The difference does not establish that either figure is wrong: one is a deliberately conservative list of individually documented deaths, while the other is an intelligence estimate intended to capture deaths that never become visible in open sources.
