Nepal has asked the United Nations-backed Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage for $20 million after the August 26 Himalayan floods. Al Jazeera reports that the finance and environment ministries submitted a joint letter seeking compensation, converting political calls for climate justice into a specific funding request. The move is distinct from the larger humanitarian appeal already supporting immediate relief operations.
The disaster began with a mountain glacier collapse that sent water, rock and mud into Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot regions and across the border area with China's Tibet region. More than 1,300 deaths had been confirmed by September 9 and thousands remained missing, according to Al Jazeera. Preliminary national estimates placed damage to property, housing and infrastructure at about $2.56 billion.
The UN and humanitarian partners separately launched a $49.6 million flash appeal on September 4. That four-month plan aims to reach more than 84,000 people with cash, shelter, health care, clean water, sanitation and protection services. The UN said the floods had severed roads, disrupted power grids and damaged water systems, complicating access before winter reaches high-altitude communities.
The two requests serve different purposes. The flash appeal is designed to close immediate operational gaps in a government-led emergency response. Nepal's $20 million request asks the newer loss-and-damage architecture to recognise and finance climate-attributed destruction. Approval would therefore matter beyond the amount: it could demonstrate whether vulnerable countries can obtain timely support from a mechanism created specifically for unavoidable climate harm.
