Ukraine is preparing contracts for the delivery of approximately 1,000 missiles for Patriot air-defence systems, Defence Minister Yevhen Khmara said during a September 8 meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group. Partner governments are expected to support the purchases, while an European Union loan would provide part of the financing for the US-made interceptors.

The next milestones are the completion of contracts, final approval of the relevant EU financing and disclosure of production and delivery schedules. The figure of about 1,000 missiles should not be read as an immediate addition to Ukraine's arsenal. Until contracted rounds enter service, the effectiveness of the plan depends on partners accepting short-term reductions in their own inventories while manufacturers expand output.
