The extraordinary range pushes the campaign far beyond the refineries and depots previously hit in western and central Russia. It also confronts Russian air defences with a much larger territory to monitor, including infrastructure that had been considered insulated from direct wartime attack.

Yamalo-Nenets is the core of Russia’s natural-gas industry, and the targeted plants process gas condensate and petroleum products. The Kyiv Independent reported that the Novy Urengoy facility handles 19.5 million tonnes of crude oil and natural gas annually and produces diesel and other products used by Russia’s military. The full extent of operational damage was not independently established on September 9.
