Claims by United States and Israeli officials that falling acute-malnutrition rates show Gaza no longer faces hunger omit the broader findings of the United Nations assessment being cited. The latest UN-backed analysis recorded genuine improvement after food and nutrition programmes expanded, but it still classified about 1.4 million people, or 67% of Gaza’s population, as experiencing crisis-level or worse acute food insecurity.
The UN agencies attributed the decline in measured malnutrition largely to wider preventive nutrition programmes, better access to treatment and increased humanitarian deliveries. In May, food parcels reached about 1.5 million people, cash assistance reached roughly 700,000 at its peak and nutrition support covered 60% of children under five. Those changes demonstrate that access and sustained assistance can produce measurable gains.
But improvement from an extreme baseline is not equivalent to adequate nutrition. The assessment said about 212,000 people remained in emergency conditions. It projected that approximately 74,000 children would need treatment for acute malnutrition over the following year, alongside about 25,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women requiring nutrition support. Shortages of varied, nutritious food, safe water, sanitation and functioning livelihoods continued.
